About this tool
MD5 Generator computes MD5 digests using a self-contained pure-JavaScript implementation (no Web Crypto — browsers do not expose MD5). It is still the right tool for legacy checksums: verifying old downloads, matching checksums published as MD5, or checksumming files for non-security purposes like deduplication.
Important: MD5 is broken for security — collisions can be forged. Never use it for passwords, signatures, or integrity where an attacker is a threat; use SHA-256 instead. Hashing is fully local.
How to use
- Type text or drop a file.
- The MD5 hex digest computes automatically.
- Copy the hash for your records or comparison.
Frequently asked questions
No. MD5 is vulnerable to collision attacks and must not be used for passwords, digital signatures, or any adversarial integrity check. It remains fine for legacy checksum verification and non-security identification.
The Web Cryptography API deliberately omits MD5 (it is considered legacy). This tool therefore ships its own compact, well-tested JavaScript implementation.
Prefer SHA-256 whenever you have the choice. Use MD5 only when the publisher provided an MD5 checksum to compare against.
No — hashing runs entirely in your browser.
