About this tool
SHA-1 Generator computes SHA-1 digests of text or files using the browser's native Web Crypto API. SHA-1 survives mainly for legacy compatibility — old checksums, Git object IDs, and systems that have not migrated yet.
Like MD5, SHA-1 is no longer considered secure against determined attackers (collision attacks are practical). Use it for matching existing SHA-1 checksums, and SHA-256 for anything new. Everything runs locally in your browser.
How to use
- Type text or drop a file.
- The SHA-1 hex digest computes automatically.
- Copy the hash for comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Not anymore — practical collision attacks exist. It is fine for legacy checksum matching but must not protect anything adversarial. Prefer SHA-256.
Historical reasons plus hardening (Git now detects known collision attacks). New systems should still choose SHA-256.
No. Hashing is 100% client-side via Web Crypto.
