About this tool
Every writer runs into a word limit sooner or later: an essay that must stay under 1,000 words, a meta description capped at 160 characters, a post that refuses to publish. This word counter tallies words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, and paragraphs live as you type, so you always know exactly where you stand.
It also estimates reading and speaking time, which helps when you are scripting a video or timing a presentation. Everything runs in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
How to use
- Paste or type your text into the input box.
- Watch the word, character, sentence, and paragraph counts update live.
- Check the reading-time estimate if you are timing a script or talk.
- Use Copy or Download to keep your text, or Clear to start over.
Frequently asked questions
Text is split on whitespace, so anything separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks counts as one word. Punctuation attached to a word (like the comma in "hello,") does not create an extra word.
Both. You get a character count that includes spaces and one that excludes them, which is useful because different platforms and assignments use different rules.
No. All counting happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you paste is uploaded, stored, or logged.
Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute; speaking time assumes roughly 130 words per minute. Dense or technical text usually takes longer in practice.
